Blog Post 12

As I look back at my 20 time project, there are some things I did well and some things I would change.  While I certainly picked something that I figured I wouldn't complete, I feel that mindset caused me to push things back down on my to do list.  Also, at the beginning of the year, I thought I had so much more time than I actually did to do the project.  I kept pushing it back thinking I still had plenty of time to do it, but time flew right by and here I am.  I was never very focused on this project from the start and even when I was working on it,  I was also doing other things and getting distracted.  I also found it very hard to stay motivated while I worked on the project since it got very frustrating at times.

I wish I would have started working on this project much earlier than I actually did.  I started around mid November, right when basketball was starting up.  While I was definitely busy throughout the season,  I found a lot more excuses and other things to do rather than working on this project.  Looking back I would work on it consistently throughout the year, rather than cramming it in big chunks whenever I felt like I was behind.  I regret not taking this project as seriously as some of the other things throughout this year because I could have done a lot more if I would have made it a priority.

I learned a lot from this project.  While I already knew this about myself, I found I am a very big procrastinator.  I kept putting this project back until I no longer couldn't.  I think since there was no expected final result, I wasn't as motivated as I would have been if I had to turn something in at the end of the year.  However, I still enjoyed this project when I did work on it and hope to continue working on it in years to come.

Blog Post 11

Since my last post I have been very focused on my speech. I'm trying to decide what I should talk about but everything that I've come up with sounds very cliche. I'm trying to decide what I learned this year from my project but they all either sound the same, or they sound too cliche. I hope everyone else is having much better luck with their speeches and I'm hoping to have my topic very soon so that I can start thinking about what I'm going to say.

Unfortunately I have put very little time into my project since my last post.  With March Madness going on I have been paying way too much attention to basketball.  My goal is to get my project rolling before Spring Break since I am going away for the entire break.  Since I won't be able to do my project then, I'll have to make the most of my time before I leave.

Finally after five months, my basketball season is over.  It was definitely fun, but I am kind of glad that I can now have some time to relax.  This will give me way more time to work on my project, which will help me get more done in a quicker amount of time.  I have begun to create my app and this have started out just as planned.  This will be the main focal point of my project and I hope it will continue to run smoothly.  My plan is to continue to create the app now that I am finally done with all my research. I have noticed that the school years' end is approaching fast, so I know that I have to work quicker and more efficient than I did earlier in the year.

Over this past break I went up north to my family's cottage.  I spent almost the entire break there so the thoughts of doing my project slipped my mind.  So sadly I didn't do anything for my project since my last post.  I am just about done with my research and will begin creating the app as soon as possible.  I am really looking forward to this part of my project because it will be a lot more fun than just researching.  I really hope I can get this going soon and with my basketball season coming to an end I will have a lot more time to do so.  Hope everyone else's projects are going well.

Blog Post 7

Since my last post I have really been focused on trying to finish up my research.  As I go through my post it feels like I haven't really accomplished much since I started.  Kind of depressing, but I know this step is necessary if I want my app to go anywhere.  I was watching Sportscenter this weekend and as I watched their segments on College Basketball, I noticed that as they showed who they were predicting to win the Wooden Award (basically the MVP for the NCAA) they only showed three stats for each player.  Points per game, assists per game, and rebounds per game.  Yes these stats are important, but what about their plus/minus.  This stat takes into account not only their offense, but also their defense.  You could have a guy that scores fifteen points per game, but plays no defense.  That player isn't going to help your team out that much.  I just wish people would not just focus on the big stats, but also focus on the little things that don't always make it in the box-score.

Other than more research, I haven't made a lot of progress since my last post.  Studying for midterms really took up most of the time, which left almost nothing for my project. Just a little more research on how to create an app, as well as researching how current NBA teams use the plus/minus stat throughout their season was all I could accomplish. Now that they are over I will have a lot more time to get done what I need to do. As I am writing this I remembered I saw on ESPN how the Atlanta Hawks use the plus/minus stat. For those of you who don't follow the NBA the Atlanta Hawks currently have the best record in the league. The segment talked about how their coaches film each of their practices and base their playing time on how well their players' plus/minus is. Maybe more teams should start doing this.

Unfortunately I haven't done anything for my project during the last three weeks.  I'm a little disappointed with myself for not doing anything over break.  I wish I could say I was too busy over the holidays because that would be a decent excuse, but in reality, there was probably three or four days where I was actually completely booked (Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve, and New Years Day).  So that's me being straight up lazy, but I've learned from my mistake and I plan on getting back on track.  Since it's been a month since I really thought about my project I'll have to do some research to remember what I did so long ago.  That will actually have me going backwards for a little, so I'll have to work even harder to catch up.  I still have a pretty good understanding of how professional teams use the plus minus stat currently which I was pretty impressed with myself.  Even though doing all this research isn't the fun part, it's still necessary so that when it comes to actually creating the app I know what I'm doing, and don't fail miserably.  The very depressing thought is that even if I do all the research I might still fail miserably anyway, but that's what this project is about.  So if any of you guys are still choosing what your project is, don't worry about failing because you'll have at least one other person in the same boat as you. (That's me).
